You have the talent and motivation to be an actor. All you need now is a talent agent!
Typically, an agent’s job is to help you get work. Agents are really the only people that have access to see what casting calls are available. Union roles only accept submissions from agents and never the actor themselves. Ultimately once the headshots and resumes are sent in the casting director will only work with your agent when it comes to getting you in for an audition.
Hundreds of people can audition essentially for the same part. Once an actor has been chosen for a part; their agents’ job then is to negotiate their contract and pay. The agent gets paid when they get you work, typically making anywhere from 10 to 20 percent profit depending on your rate of pay. Which is why agents have a strict criterion for the type of actor they sign with.
There are agents for each type of acting. An agency will have a more specialized array of agents depending on how big they are. Sometimes actors may have a separate agent for a more specialized area of acting. Research your agency before you sign on with them; you may find that agency is not what you are looking for at all. The goal here is to find one that will work hard for you and have the most interest in your career.
The actor will submit a headshot, resume and demo reel to the agency when looking for an agent. The agency will call you for an audition if they believe you may be an asset to their company. Upon receiving an audition, you will be reciting a monologue and reading lines from a script; a long with discussing your goals as an actor with the agents.
Now don’t be discouraged if you are not signed right away; this just means that they may have talent already in the same categories you fit in. Be patient and continue auditioning until you find the right agency.
The work has only begun once you obtain an agent. While you need an agent to get the auditions, ultimately, it’s the actor that books the job. If you are poor at auditions, the agent will be less willing to submit you for parts. Casting directors may be less willing to use that agency for actors as well. The agent benefits from your success, they will want you to succeed. So be well prepared for your auditions and take your chances at being a star!
