Casting Calls

Casting calls are auditions posted for a job opportunity to be in a movie, on TV, on stage or even in a commercial. These are usually posted by a producer or casting director and talent agents or managers are the only ones that know of or have access to these casting calls being offered. The daily distribution they are listed in are called Breakdowns. On occasion casting calls are open to the public depending on the role, typically for community theater or non-unionized films.

The casting director, producer, director or choreographer selects the cast during the casting process for a production project. Your headshot and resume will be submitted for the casting call if your agent or manager thinks you are a fit for the role. Ultimately if the casting director feels the same once receiving your resume, they will call you in for an audition at that point. There are several stages in a Casting Call. With the first audition they will expect you to have an acting piece prepared which can vary depending on the project. One example being that you may have to have a monologue prepared, which is typically a prepared speech directed at another character. The monologue you choose in this scenario should reflect your abilities for the role you are auditioning for. You may even need to have sides to preform which are scene samples from the script that you are auditioning for. These sides are performed with the casting director who will be seated and reading the other characters lines in a dead pan manner. However, you will need to use your talents to evoke the emotions needed for the scene. Some instances like for a stage performance you may need to have a song prepared. Once again, this song should highlight your abilities to play the character that is being auditioned for.

If the first audition goes well, the actor will get a call back or second audition. The actor will perform the same piece they did the first round of auditions but this time the casting director or even the director will give direction on the performance; this is done to test your ability of taking direction. They want to see how well you will do working on the set.

Talent usually gets called into a room by the casting directed and photographed for print advertising or TV commercials; sometimes even being put to video. Later these photos and video can be viewed on a website by the clients. They may make a choice right way or even wait days before production is set to start. You will find that Print and commercial casting calls are very frequent.

Remember when going on a casting call; being prepared is everything. Leaving a good impression with the casting director is important even if you don’t fit in for the role. If you want to make the most out of a casting call; acting classes and private coaching are priceless. Making it your goal to master Casting Calls is definitely a sure way to turn your acting dreams into reality!
